My work draws deeply from the traditions of nineteenth-century European painting, particularly the fin de siècle movements of France and Russia. Symbolism and Romanticism are the foundation of my artistic style and image-making in which an amalgamation of beauty, melancholy, myth, and memory is formed. Among the painters whose influence continues to resonate are Mikhail Vrubel, Nikolai Fechin, Édouard Manet, and Viktor Vasnetsov, each admired for their use of colour, understanding of form, and psychological depth.
European history and culture serve as a constant source of inspiration for the subjects and sentiments of my work. I attempt to capture the visual language of the nineteenth century.
The majority of my work is completed with oil paint. I occasionally make informal sketches for paintings, as way of practicing the techniques of the Old Masters, and as a way of studying life around me.
